AN APPRAISAL OF CLIMATE CHANGE MANAGEMENT AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA USING COMMUNICATION APPROACH
Abstract: This study evaluated climate change management and sustainable development in Nigeria using communication approach. To achieve this, the study raised four objective which were; examine climate change management and sustainable development in Nigeria; determine the role of communication in climate change management and sustainable development in Nigeria; examine sustainable development policies and measures covering economics environmental and social sustainability in Nigeria. This study was anchored on two theories; The development media theory and Diffusion of innovation theory. It adopted the survey research design and purposive sampling techniques to arrive at 384 as the sample size, drawn from the population of 246,160,000 using Krejcie and Morgan (1970’s) sample size determination table. All the states in Nigeria formed the population. The interview technique which necessitated the use of questionnaire and interview guide was also used to generate data for the study. Findings of the study showed that majority listed the following as some of the sustainable development policies and measures; (1) Increase share of clearer electricity (2) Changes in greenhouse gases emissions (3) Building on the Kyoto protocol in order to protect the climate and protecting environmental public benefits under restructuring. Also finding of the study revealed that communication played major role in the management of climate change and sustainable development of climate change and sustainable development in Nigeria. The study concluded that that communication played a major role in climate change management and sustainable development in Nigeria. The study also concluded that the study concluded that the majority of the respondents claimed knowledge of sustainable development policies and measures covering economic, environmental and social sustainability in Nigeria. Therefore, the study recommended among others that there is need for the training and retraining of staff of the public relations department on how to conceive and apply the media relations strategies. This will help increase the tempo of their attitude to work. The study also further recommended that it is good and relevant for government or organization to conscientiously plan and organize workshops, conferences, seminars and lectures to improve on the conception and execution of media relations strategies as well as orientate them on the importance of their job.
